Living Wall as a Backyard Fence...uh.. I mean wall.
Check with Permitting Department
The first step in living wall construction is what type of environment are you planning your wall for and what do you hope to achieve and what problems are you hoping to mitigate.
In this case study, the problems are 1. Noise pollution 2. Invasive species mitigation 3. Safety for residents 4. Low maintenance
Based on these issues, and the goal of producing an industrial design, a solid wall was decided on instead of a fence. Because of watershed issues, the wall needed to allow for drainage from the highway towards the backyard. Thus the wall needed to be raised on footers or suspended between solid wood posts.
Because the wall therefore had to be designed out of cob for ease of construction of new panel designs a structural engineer is being consulted in order to approve soundness of the structure.
